graZnar! is the portfolio and personal web blog of me, Sam Guzik, a senior at Washington University in St. Louis, photographer and multimedia journalist. This site is intended as a way of chronicling the things I see and experience on a regular basis and as a way of keeping people updated about my life. For the foreseeable future, a big part of this blog will also look at what I plan to do next year whether that is in journalism or something entirely different.
Currently, I serve as the director of new media at Student Life Newspaper, the independent paper of Washington University and the oldest paper in Missiouri, and I’ve previously served as the editor in chief, senior news editor, news reporter and staff photographer. Previously, I have worked as a blogger for AOL’s College News Blog, Bright Hall (now called The Cram), and as an intern to the interactive desk of Newsday.com working with the editorial team and with the launch of the paper’s new Web site in July 2009.
As a journalist, I tend to focus on community driven stories that have ramifications on a larger scale, politics and any breaking news that crosses my desk. An avid amateur photographer, I am also interested telling stories using new media—including photo essays, audio slideshows and video.
The title graznar, meaning to quack in Spanish, stems from my attachment to ducks—specifically the rubber kind. The name was thought up during one particularly late night in high school and has stuck since then.
